Casa Pedro Domecq

Our good friends and neighbors just came back after a weeks vacation in Cancun, Mexico. Knowing, of course, that I love wine they brought back a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Mexico, more specifically, Valle De Calafia, Baja California.
I have NEVER had wine produced in Mexico before and was very curious, and had no idea of what to expect.
The bottle they brought was the 2005 Casa Pedro Domecq Cabernet Sauvignon XA Vinos Premium. I tried to find it online and only found a few sites, the majority in Spanish, which is not my forte. I found one single site mentioning price, it said $12.95, but you could not buy it from there.
Well, time to taste it. This wine has a dark red, inky color in the glass. Very lush fruit on the nose with black currant, dark cherries and a little earthiness. Medium length finish on the palate with dark berries, black currant and firm tannins.
I poured this wine to my husband without telling him what I opened. He came back after finishing his glass and said: Not bad, pour me another glass. Upon hearing what I was pouring he was pleasantly surprised and told me it was better than he expected. I share his opinion in this case. I really enjoyed this bottle of wine. I have not done a ton of research, but after a couple of searches on google I did not find a place to buy this bottle in the States. If you do bump in to it and the price above is correct, grab it and enjoy. I know I will...

Victoria, you are absolutely correct when you say this cabernet sauvignion was pretty darn good. My wife and I had taken a three day cruise to baja and took a tour of Casa Pedro Domecq. I bought three wines and this bottle was the best. I have only been a wine man for about one year and do prefer the shiraz. This is only the second Cabernet Sauvignon bottle I have opened and I do believe they have taken me. Not as soft as a Merlot and not as bold and spicy as a Shiraz. Wonderful!

Thanks for your comment! I do think it is a really good wine for the price. Let me know if you find it somewhere here in the States...
Cheers!

We agree completely. My wife and I and another couple spent a week on the Mexican Riveria between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Discovering this wine was one of the many highlights of our trip. I called a couple of the larger liquor stores in the Rochester, N.Y. area and found one at least one willing to search for it. Wish me luck. JWL

Good luck in your search. I haven't put down a ton of energy on it, but the little research I have done have not helped me locate this wine here in the States... I hope you have better luck.

My husband brought this wine back from Mexico for me a few months ago. I am finding it almost impossible to find here in the states. If anyone finds a way to locate this wine, I would love that information. This wine was as good or even better than any other wine I have tasted!

Hi! Well now I've finally found some info on this wine :) Thank you. I've been searching for awhile.. I have a bottle of Casa Pedro Chateau Domecq Cabernet Sauvignon "Cosecha Seleccionada" 1985. I bought it when I was in PV Mexico in 1993 and had NO IDEA about wines (I was 23). I've held on to it for this long and stumbled upon it the other day. Just doing research and don't want to actually open it until I find out more.
